My baking experiment #1 – chocolate chip cookies

Today is baking day! After my mini baking experiment, i’m ready to bake for real!

I decided to start with something easy & basic: chocolate chip cookies. I followed this recipe but since it made a big batch, i halved everything:

  • PREP TIME: 15 MINUTES
  • COOKING TIME: 9 MINUTES
  • SKILL LEVEL: EASY
  • MAKES: 30 COOKIES

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 1/8 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
  • 3/8 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/8 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • large egg
  • 1 cup (12-oz. pkg.) NESTLÉ TOLL HOUSE Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts

INSTRUCTIONS

PREHEAT oven to 375° F.COMBINE flour, baking soda and salt in small bowl. Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract in large mixer bowl until creamy. Add egg and beat well. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in morsels and nuts. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets.

BAKE for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.

I baked a dozen cookies and still had dough leftover. So i refrigerated the leftover dough for about an hour until firm, then shaped the dough into a log and wrapped it in wax paper to be used next time.
The cookies turned out pretty good! Taste just like store-bought ones 🙂
But there are things i could improve on. First, some cookies had lots of choc chips while others only had a couple. I need to mix the chips more evenly. Second, the cookies came out to be different shape & sizes. There were large ones & smaller ones. I need to make them more uniform so they can be baked more evenly.

But overall, i’m happy with my very first attempt at making cookies from scratch. Next time will be better!

I’m aiming to bake twice a week, since i need to eat all my baked goods and i figure i should have some time in between to finish them and try not to get too fat.

So i’ll be back in a couple days with something new to bake. Stay tuned!! 😀
