It’s a cloudy & rainy day today. I’m not a big fan of the rain; it gets me down. So i decided to bake up a batch of sweet buns to sweeten up the day:
- 1 1/4 cups flour
- dash salt
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 3/4 tsp yeast
- 1 egg, beaten, divided
- 1 Tbsp butter, melted
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 1/4 cup milk, warm
FILLINGS: Nutella, Peanut Butter, Strawberry Preserves
- In bowl whisk together flour, salt, sugar, and yeast. Make a well in the middle and add 1/2 the egg, butter and vanilla and mix with fork. Slowly add warm milk and continue to mix until dough comes together.
- Knead on lightly floured surface 10-15 minutes until dough becomes smooth and elastic. Form into ball, cover with plastic and refrigerate 30-40 minutes.
- Remove from fridge and form into 6 small balls. Flatten one ball at a time (keep others covered with tea towel) with palm of hand, pulling and stretching gently with fingers. Fill with desired filling (1 heaping tsp), seal edges together and gently form into ball again, making sure edges stay sealed. Place seal side down in lightly greased baking pan, leaving them slightly apart. Cover well with tea towel and let rise 2 hours in draft-free warm area.
- Brush with remaining 1/2 egg and 1 tsp milk. Bake in preheated 320°F oven 30-40 minutes until golden. Let cool slightly and dust with powdered sugar. Enjoy warm!
Nothing beats the smell of freshly-baked bread from the oven. It turns my tiny apartment into a bakery. The buns turned out perfect: beautiful golden brown and crispy on the outside, soft & tender inside. Needless to say i liked the Nutella-filled one best, but the other two were awesome as well!
These buns make a great breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can eat them all throughout the day, with coffee, tea or as an accompaniment to a meal. Or simply eat them on their own! I devoured 3 buns as soon as they came out of the oven! I’m super happy with these yummy sweet buns; they definitely turned a drab day into a sweet day! 🙂
